Keep a favourite outgrown T shirt by converting it into a handy market bag – no sewing required and all done in under 10 minutes!
You will need:
- old t-shirt
- ruler (optional)
Step 1: Lay the T shirt flat, making sure the seams line up perfectly (including armholes). (Photo 1)
Step 2: Cut around the arms and neck of the shirt, and cut off the hem at the bottom. (Photo 2)
Step 3: Cut strips along the bottom of the shirt, making sure you cut through both the front and back together. If you like, you can use a ruler to measure how far up you want the strip to go, as this will determine how big the bag is inside. You can also measure how wide you want the strips to be – you need to have an even number of strips (eg. 10,12 etc). (Photo 3)
Step 4: Tie knots in the strips – hold both front and back together, and tie them to the next strip (also with front and back together). Repeat until all your strips are tied. Your bag will now be formed. You can leave the loose ends hanging as tassels, or you can turn the bag inside out for a cleaner look. (Photos 4 and 5)
Recycling at its best
Doing this activity with your little one will help them understand there is more than 1 purpose for the every day items that surround them. It teaches creativity and problem solving. It could also lead into a game about looking around the room at various objects and coming up with different uses and ways it could be used. Fostering imagination in this way can lead to some wonderful, creative responses!
