Pioneer Village Museum Walk
Where: Kangaroo Valley

You may have heard that Kangaroo Valley is a city-dweller’s paradise, but did you know there is a hidden family-friendly bushwalk tucked away within the Village itself? Located behind the Pioneer Village Museum is a truly spectacular walk that has to be seen to be believed. Trust us!

The walk is like a figure 8, with 2 loops that intersect at a wooden bridge. Take the short loop and the kids will be able to walk the whole track themselves (from age 3 or so) through eucalypts, squiggly gums and across large rocks. This track is basically flat and there are Kangaroo River views along the way too. This loop will take around an hour or so to complete.

Crossing the little wooden bridge about half way through the small loop will lead you to the longer loop, and this is the truly stunning part that most visitors miss! The track descends into an absolutely breathtaking gully, complete with water cascades, moss gardens and beautiful rock formations. The kids will just love to rock hop across the stream and splash about in the cascades, although younger kids will need help with the climbs and creek crossings. There is a good chance you will have this place to yourselves (unless you run into South Coast Kids along the way as we LOVE this walk!), so we suggest you pack a picnic, relax and enjoy this pristine area. It is truly a special place.

Once you’re ready to face civilization again, you will climb back out of the gully past some little caves (we have seen wombats hanging about here) and retrace your steps back to the bridge to join up with the smaller loop track again. All up you can expect to be walking for up to 2 hours.

Access to the walk is gained by paid admission to the Pioneer Village Museum – a quaint Old Sydney Town style museum with lots of interesting buildings and artefacts. This is worth a visit in itself! Museum entry costs $10 for adults, $5 for kids, or $20 for a family (2 adults/3 children).

Getting there: The Museum is open 10am to 4pm every Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and every day during school holidays. It is located on Moss Vale Road in Kangaroo Valley, on the western (Southern Highlands) side of the Hampden Bridge. Onsite parking is available.
